Why Most CVs FAIL

Over 90% of CVs will be eliminated before the interview process. With hundreds of CVs to process, large recruiters will often use a quick four stage process to reject unsuccessful applicants. Our package is designed to ensure that your CV stands out, and makes that important first impression.

The four stages of CV elimination:

1. First glance (10-20 seconds): CVs that are too long, poorly organised, badly laid out or contain large bodies of text are unlikely to progress beyond this stage. If the reader cannot quickly gain a rough idea of your key selling points and background, the chances are that they never will. Roughly 65% of applicants will be eliminated at this stage.

2. Second glance (30-60 seconds): An evaluation of whether your personal profile, key selling points, career history, qualifications and academic background make you a suitable applicant. All of this information should be on the first page of the document.

3. In depth look (1-2 minutes): A thorough examination of each CV remaining. Spelling or grammatical errors and unexplained gaps in career history tend to be common pitfalls here.

4. Short listing for interview: A selection of the best CVs remaining to fill available interview slots.

Typically, for popular vacancies, less than 5% of candidates will be invited for interview. The Pro Template Pack will help ensure that your CV makes it through the filter process.

So what are the most common mistakes?

1. Not ‘targeting’ you CV towards the position being applied for (failing to demonstrate how previous experience or skills are relevant to the job being targeted and as a result, failing to maximize the perceived value of the applicant).

2. Lack of covering letter (this will add meat to the bones of your CV and better demonstrates your writing skills).

3. Poor visual layout (a CV is a reflection of its owner – an untidy or poorly labelled document sets a bad first impression and won’t do the content within it justice).

5. Poor organisation/structure (this will dramatically reduce readability and chances of success).

6. Unnecessary jargon or technical terminology

7. Irrelevant content

8. Length

9. Unexplained gaps in career history

10. Spelling or grammatical error
